Queerios: A Radical Queer Coloring and Activity Book This will be the kind of activity book I never got (but always wanted) in my early teens. I'd like to put together a coloring and activity book highlighting people who were groundbreaking to you, personally. Harvey Milk and Oscar Wilde will always have a place carved out for them. This is about exploring people who did more than admit their same-sex attraction to the rest of the world. How about what Leslie Feinberg and Kate Borenstein did for trans visability and challenging gender norms? Or how James baldwin and Audre Lorde made queer people challenge racism within the GLBT community. And, just so we're clear? You don't have to identify as queer/trans to have a hero who does. Priority will be given to activities like dot-to-dots, paper dolls, and word searches, but coloring pages with biographies are great as well. The deadline for this is March 1st so I can have it put together by mid-to-late march, and out in the world by April. And of course, if you know someone who is interested, please feel free to pass this on to them, or repost widely. Please send pdfs of high resolution jpegs to piratesarah@gmail.com | | Sunday, September 11th, 2011 | 12:25 pm [mardoucomics]

Sparkplug Comics
Dylan Williams, the artist and publisher behind Sparkplug Comics, was an amazing supporter of mini-comics. He died this weekend after a struggle with cancer aged 39. Any support you could give by supporting Sparkplug Comics or any of the ongoing auctions of comic art currently ongoing would really help. This is so sad. Personally I discovered so many amazing comics artists through Dylan including meeting my husband whose first book was published by Sparkplug. The tribute on the Comics Reporter is here and this is the link to Sparkplug's store. | | Sunday, July 17th, 2011 | 4:09 pm [mrsnoggle]

Sale at Black Light Diner distro! I'm trying to downsize Black Light Diner distro in preparation for a move to a smaller apartment, so I am having a sale! For every four zines or other items ordered, get an additional zine (priced at $3.00 or less) free! Just put the name of the zine you want in the comments section of the checkout form. Don't worry about shipping. Sale runs until the end of March or until I remember to take this down. I also noticed that Canadian readers were sometimes overpaying for postage, so there is now a cheaper Canada/Mexico shipping tier. Yay for finally figuring out Paypal shopping carts three years into running the distro. :) Thanks for reading, Erica | | Thursday, February 24th, 2011 | 10:20 pm [themachinestops]

black light diner distro, february 2011 update
Hey, just a friendly notice about the new zines available at Black Light Diner distro!! ROOTS OF HOPE #3 (Portland, OR) Korinna's second Latin America travel zine starts off with a visually stunning cover. Seriously, my jaw dropped when I saw it: every issue comes with a different glossy photograph with hand-written titles. This fat, text-heavy zine chronicles Korinna's travels through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. A stop in Bogota finds her searching for a Colombian boyfriend, and ending up discussing plastic surgery with Australians (I didn't know this, but Cali, Colombia is the plastic surgery capital of the world). In Ecuador, she has a life-changing experience on a commune and befriends a Finnish girl who will become her traveling partner for much of the rest of the zine. Korinna also discusses the widespread use of cocaine in South America, and the ways in which imperialism fuel the drug culture there as much as here. Pictures of street art and cityscapes accompany and enhance the stories, giving them depth. An epic zine for anyone who is interested in Latin American politics, travel, or mature analyses of anarchism. $3.50, quarter sized, 82 pages. ( more under cut! )Also, I will be closing the distro to online orders after this summer. I don't really like the day to day work of coding a website, dealing with Paypal shopping carts, or any of the various other fiddly things that go into running a zine distro with an online store. I will continue to run the distro as a table-only venture. So if you don't live in the eastern US and want some zines from me, make sure to order! Thanks for reading, Erica | | Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 | 8:11 pm [themachinestops]

black light diner distro, october 2010 update
Hey everyone, just want to give you a heads-up about the new comics and zines available at Black Light Diner distro! BOOTY #24 (Holyoke, MA) The newest issue of Anne's personal comic is about her experiences as a roller derby referee. The stress of constant practice and bouts wears on her, but a real enthusiasm for the sport shines through. There are also one-page stories relating to stress reduction and Halloween costumes, and a diagram of what to put in your roller derby gear bag. Charming hand-drawn illustrations throughout, in Anne's usual doodley style. $2.00, half-legal, 16 pages.
( more zines! )
Thanks for reading, --Erica
P.S. All US orders over $20, and all international orders over $30, will receive free shipping until the end of October!

Captions This entry is cross postedI haven't uploaded a picture for days because I seem to be (ooh look! The time is 11:11) stuck on a caption. I thought a few peoples might find it relaxing to suggest a few lines that might make for an effective pun. TOPIC: California proposition 19. I was hearing a radio segment wherin the Talkshow host was saying that none of the current government officials in congress/senate were supportive of legalizing pot. That is to say that both Dems & Reps are against it. Makes one paranoid that the whole purpose of the ballot initiative is simply to take a head count. Ideas? black light diner distro, march 2010 update
Hey everyone! Just a little heads-up about the new zines available at Black Light Diner Distro! HIGH ON BURNING PHOTOGRAPHS #5/ASYLUM #1 (Pittsburgh, PA/Santa Clarita, CA) This split between Ocean and her penpal Matt, who is incarcerated. Meeting through a prisoner book program, they compiled this zine without ever having met, and the result is a zine on a diverse number of topics. In her articles, Ocean relates an attempt by her boss to create a Jackson Pollock painting, revisits 1997, and provides haiku book reviews. Matt's contributions tend toward the philosophical, as he questions what it means for something to be counterfeit, opines on philosophical zombies, and writes a "love letter" to Folsom Prison. I haven't read very many zines by prisoners, and this one was an eye-opener, providing just a glimmer of insight about what it is actually like to be incarcerated, and the many trials Matt will have to face even when "released." ( more under cut! )Thanks for reading! Erica | | Sunday, February 28th, 2010 | 1:00 pm [misterwillson] |

December issue of ¶News
I've just completed a short e-zine called “Pilcrow News”. The digital is saved under kilprosehn.pdf and its only 264KB. The good news is that it is free, unless you want to send me $1.00 ╽. But all that info can be had from the link above. “Pilcrow News” has been around for some time now. Although I've been writing e-zines since 2002, I never really settled on the name “Pilcrow News” until 2004. At first, my main objective was to be as creative as I could with the zine so that I could measure improvements of typesetting, writing, illustration over the years thru comparison of older issues. Although I have yet to sit myself down and compare my old issues with the current December 2009 issue, what I'm really after is readership. I explore the formula used in the movie industry that entices audiences to sit thru 120 minutes of film footage. I enjoy a good plot just as much as the next guy, but 3-act structures have become so predictable in movies that I make an effort to uncover new indy films that abandon the practice of traditional storytelling. I'm also very fond of music and unless you despise pop and pledge allegiance to heavy metal, you probably aren't going to see eye to eye with my tastes. To make up for that that, however, you might enjoy my perspective on cartooning. I like to draw from an apolitical consciousness, hoping that that might give syndicated editorial cartoonists a run for their money. Take a look http://r.aguirre.home.att.net/pilcrowtoon/launch.html

black light diner distro, december 2009 update
Hello everyone! Just a little update about the new zines available at Black Light Diner Distro! HELLO ALABAMA: A ONE-SHOT DISASTER (Tuscaloosa, AL) Courtney's ( Muse) anti-love letter to Alabama was written after she packed up and moved from North Carolina to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to attend library science school. The move came with an unexpected downside in the racist and conservative attitudes of some of her classmates. While certainly not indicting all Alabamans, Courtney describes the self-silencing she must go through to be safe in her new location, from being forced to tear a pro-choice sticker off her car to having to check her political ideals at the door in order to have at least a few friends. There's also a piece about the underfunded and underutilized recycling program in Tuscaloosa, and how its mismanagement by clueless city officials has had devastating consequences for the working-class community who must live next to the plant. I've never moved to a drastically different geographical location (yet), but as someone who grew up in a more conservative area the themes of alienation rang true, and I think this would be a great zine for anyone who feels out of step with their surroundings, whether they're a native or a newcomer. ( more )Also, I'm really on the lookout for some new zines to carry, in particular personal comics. If you have something you think I'd be interested in, drop me an email or send it to me! Thanks for reading, Erica | | Sunday, October 18th, 2009 | 8:00 pm [themachinestops]

black light diner distro, october 2009 update
Hey everyone! It's been awhile since I posted about the new zines and comics available at Black Light Diner Distro, and there are a ton of them! BOOTY #19 (Amherst, MA) Covering the time period between September 2003 and March 2005, this issue of Anne's personal comic book includes work stories, an encounter with an animate snowman, a last-minute, surprisingly cheap vacation to Iceland (!), and a very moving piece about Anne's relationship to her breasts, tying in with her mother's double mastectomy. Booty is a zine I started reading when it was carried by the late, great Pander Zine Distro, and I'm happy to say that it is just as I've remembered it: smart, often funny, and with simple, cute art that tells its stories well. Half-legal, 16 pages. ( more under cut )Thanks for reading, and check out the site! xo, Erica P.S. For a totally non-limited time, all orders of $20 or more in the US get a free upgrade to Priority shipping, and all orders get a free pin! | | Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 | 6:53 pm [junkpile]
